Where I fundamentally disagree with you is in your initial premise that we all start off the same as inexperienced kids, and that those who gain experience gain confidence.
We do not start at the same place. Individuals have fundamental differences in temperament, which affect the way they perceive the world and formulate judgments.
I’ll give you an example: When I was a kid, I was very self-conscious – literally, conscious of myself. If I tried a sport, I was acutely aware at how I was performing at that sport and how I compared to the other kids. If I finished the game and played poorly, I knew I played poorly. I knew that I had 3 choices – either practice hard and get better at the game, do not practice and accept inferiority, or do not play the game.
To compare, my 6 year old son is not self conscious – literally, not conscious of himself. He goes on the ice to play hockey, falls down a lot, misses the puck, etc – and when the game is done and I ask him how it went, he smiles and says “it went great, I’m one of the best players on the ice.”
