Babies don’t have the ability to think logically, for example (Te). Babies and young children basically have 2 functions – Fi and Se. Fi is the process of making judgments based on how the individual feels about a subject (for example, eating a food because it is liked, or spitting it out because it isn’t liked). Se is the seeking out of sensations and experiences in the moment. As the child begins to mature, they must develop a “learning function” – a function where sensory input is taken in and processed internally so that the individual can learn, rather than just experience things in present time. Some children will develop the learning function Ni (introverted Intuition), others Si (introverted Sensing). Individuals who develop Ni tend to be best at sensing patterns, similarities, and lateral thinking. They tend to focus on the abstract – what COULD be, rather than what IS. Individuals who develop Si tend to be best at sensing differences, sorting, tracking details and vertical thinking. They tend to focus on the concrete – what IS, rather than what could be.
